First reading of Educating Esme

So far I really am enjoying the book. I find it interesting and it relates to my major since I want to be an elementary ed teacher. I really do not like her boss Mr. Turner though, he is very unprofessional for example, when he calls her at 11:30 pm for no good reason. I hope my boss is not as unprofessional as he is because I do plan to have a life outside of my work. I found it interesting how Esme said she was going to be mean to the kids in the beginning of the year to create a structure and mannerly order. It may sound weird to some because you want the students to like you but I actually agree with this method. As a teacher you want students to take you seriously and you want them to listen to you. One of the major problems I found while teaching kindergarten last year was the fact that the students thought as me as their best friend. I was thrilled they liked me but I was getting tired of them asking me to come over for play dates and wanted them to think of my as a teacher. I like how creative Esme is. I love how she realized the students struggled with letter sounds but instead of yelling at them for not knowing them by now i liked how she had them create a project to present to the kindergarteners. This was helping them learn their vowels but also helping the kindergarteners and did not make them feel stupid. Lastly, I liked how when a book was stolen Esme closed up the whole library until it was returned. The students learned their lesson and will never steal a book again because they know what will happen if they do. It makes sense that she does not want them to steal a book even if it sounds small because she is using her own money on them. Overall I enjoyed the beginning of this book and can't wait to read more.
